The Truth Behind Some Popular Horror Movies

 

Nothing to be afraid of, it’s only a movie. Well until it isn’t that is. The one thing that makes a good scary movie even scarier is when it’s based on a true story. It’s hard to believe that some of the most popular horror movies we know and love really do have some truth to them, but they do.

 

Here are some of the more famous horror movies that are based on actual events:

 

 

The Exorcist (1973)

One of my all-time favorite horror movies, “The Exorcist”, is based on the real life exorcisms performed, by the Roman Catholic Church, on an anonymous boy who was known under the pseudonym “Roland Doe” or Robbie Mannheim”. In his teens at the time, the boy was the victim of demonic possession and the events of the exorcism were recorded by the attending priest, Raymond Bishop.

 

 

The Amityville Horror (1979) and (2005)

The Amityville Horror is an account of the DeFeo murders. On November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. shot and killed six members of his family at 112 Ocean Avenue, a large Dutch Colonial house situated in a suburban neighborhood in Amityville, on the south shore of Long Island, New York. This is the same home portrayed in the movie.

 

 

The Conjuring

The Conjuring claims to come from the true case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the American paranormal investigators that founded the New England Society for Psychic Research in 1952.

 

The movie is based on the story of Roger and Carolyn Perron who, along with their five daughters, moved into a colonial farmhouse in Harrisville, R.I., and quickly began experiencing what they described as both haunting and spiritual Possessions. They invited the Warrens to visit the farmhouse and investigate. Over the nine years they lived in the house, the Perrons described spirits, both harmless and angry, that “stunk of rotting flesh” and routinely arrived at 5:15 a.m. to levitate their beds.

 

 

The Haunting in Connecticut (2009)

The Haunting in Connecticut is based on the story of the Snedeker family, who in 1986  rented an old home in Southington, Connecticut. Allen and Carmen Snedeker moved into the home with their daughter and three sons.

 

To its horror, the family soon discovered that their home had once been a funeral parlor and the oldest son began seeing ghosts and horrifying visions. The experiences quickly spread to the other family members and even got worse.

 

 

The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is based on the life of Anneliese Michel who was possessed by demons so powerful that it took nearly a year to achieve. The case attracted media and public attention because of the Catholic Church’s unusual decision to use the 400-year-old ritual of exorcism, which has rarely been used since the 18th Century.
Although the term “based on a true story” is obviously a lot different than “a true story” it still lends a lot of merit to a horror movie and, needless to say, makes it a whole lot scarier to watch.
